Different types of docket printers use different types of paper rolls. You must use the correct style of paper for your printer. First, you need to determine what type of printer you have:

• dot matrix – needs an inked ribbon to print images. This type of printer uses plain paper rolls – either bond (1 ply) or carbonless (2 or 3 ply), depending upon your requirements.
• thermal – uses heat to activate chemicals impregnated in the paper to print images and does not use a ribbon. This type of printer uses thermal paper rolls.

*Hint: If you are unsure of the type of paper that you need, scratch a little of the existing roll with your fingernail. If it marks clearly, that is thermal paper.

"Thermal" paper is paper that has been pre-coated or impregnated with special chemicals that react with heat at a specific temperature. When the thermal paper passes over the print head in a thermal printer, the areas in direct contact with the print head turn black, producing an image.

Text, images and barcodes can be produced on thermal paper at very fast speeds. Dual or two-colour thermal printers are also available, enabling the printing of both black and another colour – for example, red. These work by applying the heat source at differing temperatures.

*Hint: To ensure the safe storage of your thermal printouts, don't store them in plastic. Plastic coverings can react with the printed image and cause it to fade at an accelerated rate.

Inferior grade papers can be quite coarse and can act as an abrasive on the thermal print head of your printer, and tend to produce prolific amounts of "paper dust". Paper dust causes jamming and is a major contributing factor to the malfunction and destruction of printer and POS equipment.

Sub-standard thermal paper also tends to have a thinner thermal coating, or contain unexpected foreign chemical residue, forcing the print heads to work harder to produce an image.

Failure to use approved grade papers can also lead to warranties on your printing equipment being invalidated.
